Here is a blissed coach. Ricardo Piatti, the italian coach of Ivan Ljubicic, could also take a bit of the success of Novak Djokovic that he was coaching till last month as the 19 years old player won vs Three seeded players.(Gonzalez, Haas, Monfils).


You just broke up with Djokovic, and he’s now in the quarter final.....

I’m very happy for him. We talked during the Roma tournament and we agreed that he'll need a coach only dedicated to him, and I encouraged him to do so. I'm not surprised by his success. I know how well he can play. During the masters series in Miami this year, he played at an unbelievable high level vs Paul-Henri Mathieu (win 6-1, 6-3). He needs a couple of great victories like this to really explode. It’s good that it happens to him during a grand slam tournament. 

What does he have to improve, what does he have to work on? 

He has to play in a more offensive way. He has to take the game under control directly when he returns. He improved a lot but he has the possibility to progress more in that way. He has a good serve and he could become one of the best server of the tour. He also has a good mental, very strong and mature.

How far do you think he can go ? 

His goal is to become world n° 1 and he has the potential for sure.

Do you think he has a chance vs Nadal?

It’s going to be a very interesting match. Novak has watched him play many times on different tournaments and as he’s clever, he understands lot of things of nadal’s game. It’s a good time for Novak to play him and I’m sure that tomorrow he’ll enter the court to win the match. But of course, we know that Nadal hasn’t any weaknesses on clay, the key of the match is that Novak doesn’t accept the fight and he’ll have to attack. 

Is Ivan’ s presence at the quarter surprise you ?

Not really, as most of the european players, he grew up playing on clay and he always had good results. He went to semi final in Hamburg, some quarters at Roma and Monte Carlo. But, as many players, he’ll need to play more on clay. The problem is that his clay season begins in Monte Carlo and ends in Paris. It’s short compared to hard court season. As a result, it’s too short to get good feelings on clay , to get used to the special clay movements.


Djokovic is serbian, Ljubicic and Ancic are croatians. All three were in the quarter finals, do they have a particular talent with the tennis ball? 

No, they have a particular talent for all sports. It’s their education as they have something special for sports in general. It’s their education. Ivan is friend with all the sportsmans of his country, volley ball players, handball players..... When he won a bronze medal at the Olympics in double with fellow countryman Mario Ancic in Athens in 2004. I really saw how important it was for him. It’s an essential part of their culture.

Vous vous séparez de Djokovic, et le voilà en quarts de finale.....

Je suis très content pour lui. On a discuté lors du tournoi de Rome, il a besoin d'un coach dédié. Je l'y ai encouragé. Mais je ne suis pas surpris de son succès. Je sais comment il peut jouer. A Miami, en mars, il a joué un match d'un niveau incroyable contre Paul-Henri Mathieu (victoire 6-1, 6-3). Il a besoin de quelques victoires pour exploser. C'est bien que cela lui arrive ici, dans un tournoi aussi relevé.

Qu'a-t-il le plus amélioré dans son jeu, et que doit-il encore travailler ?

Il doit encore jouer de manière plus offensive. Il doit prendre le jeu à son compte dès le retour. Il s'est amélioré, mais doit encore pousser dans ce sens. Son service est très bon, mais peut devenir l'un des tout meilleurs. Et sur le plan mental, il est très fort, très mûr.

Lors de son match contre Monfils, il a joué une quantité d'amorties calamiteuses.....

Il lui arrive d'en abuser parfois.

Jusqu'où le voyez-vous aller ?

En fait, il ambitionne de devenir numéro 1 mondial et il en a le potentiel.

A-t-il une chance contre Nadal ?

Ce sera un match intéressant. Novak a beaucoup regardé Rafael, sur tous les tournois, et comme il est intelligent, il comprend beaucoup de choses de son jeu. Je crois que c'est le moment pour lui de le jouer, et je suis sûr qu'il sera sur le court demain pour le battre. Maintenant, on sait que Nadal n'a aucun point faible sur terre. La clé, c'est que Djokovic ne devra pas accepter le combat, il devra attaquer.

A un moindre degré, la présence de Ljubicic en quart est-elle aussi une surprise ?

Pas vraiment. Comme la plupart des joueurs européens, il a grandi sur la terre battue, et il y a toujours eu de bons résultats. Il a déjà fait une demi-finale à Hambourg, des quarts à Monte-Carlo et Rome. Après, comme beaucoup d'autres joueurs, il aurait besoin d'y jouer plus. Le problème, c'est que sa saison sur terre commence à Monte-Carlo et finit à Paris. C'est court par rapport à la saison sur dur. Et c'est court pour avoir le feeling de la terre, des déplacements.

Djokovic est serbe, Ljubicic croate, comme Mario Ancic. Ils étaient trois en quarts de finale. Ont-ils un talent particulier avec la balle ?

Non, ils ont un talent particulier dans tous les sports. J'ai appris beaucoup de ces deux pays, parce qu'ils ont un truc particulier avec le sport. C'est leur éducation. Ivan est pote avec tous les sportifs de son pays, les volleyeurs, les joueurs de handball... Quand il a gagné en double une médaille de bronze olympique (à Athènes en 2004 aux côtés d'Ancic, ndlr), j'ai vu à quel point c'était important pour lui. C'est une part essentielle de leur culture.
